East Cape Province Alexandria Located south of the town Alexandria, between the Sundays River Mouth and Cannon Rocks, is the Woody Cape Nature Reserve which is home to the Alexandria Hiking Trail. The Woody Cape Nature Reserve forms part of the Alexandria State Forest and covers 15 460 ha, most of which is an extensive sand-dune "sea", with patches of thicket and forest. This is one of the largest active coastal dunefields in the world, and the largest in South Africa. Less than 10 000 years old, this field is still expanding. Amatola This trail is situated in the Amatola range, one of the most scenic mountain areas in Southern Africa. It starts from Maden dam, 43 km's from King William's Town and ends at Hogsback. The Hogback hamlet (immortalized as the place that kindled the imagination of a young J.R.R. Tolkien with visions of hobbits, dwarf lords and elfin kings of the Middle Earth kingdom) is perhaps the best known area of the Amatolas, and its surroundings provide a glimpse of what the trail has to offer. Mountain Zebra Situated in the Mountain Zebra National Park about 30 km west of Cradock. This trail passes through typical Karoo midland vegetation - a transitional zone between the succulent-dominated veld of the arid Great Karoo to the west and the wetter grasslands to the east. The trail is a circular 25,6 km trail and will take about 3 days to complete. There are several shorter trails that each take an hour or more to complete. The Tsolwana Game Reserve is 8 500 HA in size and is situated between Whittlesea, Queenstown and Tarkastad in the Eastern Cape. This is a region of extremes - searing hot summers and freezing cold winters in an arid Karoo habitat. Harsh but beautiful, it is home to a multitude of game species, indigenous and exotic, rare and common.
